Abstract:There is a high risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and thromboembolic events during and after gastrointestinal endoscopy for patients on long-term antithrombotic therapy (antiplatelet/anticoagulant) drug therapy. Thus, physicians need to formulate an adjustment plan for antithrombotic therapy and carefully weigh the pros and cons of the adjustment plan before endoscopy. To address this issue, the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and the European Society of Gastroenterology (ESGE); the American Society of Gastroenterology (ASGE); the Asian Pacific Association of Gastroenterology (APAGE) and the Asian Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (APSDE); the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES); and the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (KSGE) have published and/or updated relevant guidelines to help physician to adjust antithrombotic therapy during the perioperative period of endoscopy. This article provides a comparison among the definitions and recommendations in those different guidelines and a summary of domestic present studies, to help the relevant decision-making process.
